A chemical peel procedure is used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck, chest or hands. It involves the application of a chemical solution to the skin, which causes the outer layer to peel off. This process promotes the growth of new skin cells, leading to smoother, more even-toned skin.
There are three types of peels, based on how deeply they penetrate:
Mild or superficial peels: These peels target the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis) and are typically used for minor skin imperfections. Common acids used include alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). We use the minimal-downtime Cimel peel and patients can go back to work right after.
Medium peels: These peels penetrate the outer and middle layers of the skin (dermis). TCA peel (Trichloroacetic acid) is often used for medium peels but in lower concentrations. At the Clinics we use the Cosmelan medium peel to treat new spots and superficial brown spots and melasma.
Deep peels: These peels penetrate the deeper layers of the skin and are usually performed by medical professionals. TCA in higher concentrations is commonly used for deep peels such as the Dermamelan. It’s our most effective wrinkle reduction and hyperpigmentation treatment, targeting melasma, brown spots, age spots and PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation).

Chemical peels offer both gentle or more intense skin resurfacing to achieve targeted skin rejuvenation. They are safe for most skin types and ethnic backgrounds, and are very cost effective compared to other modalities such as laser or IPL.
Chemical peels can help improve acne by resolving infection in the pores and reducing inflammation. They may also minimize textured and pigmented acne scars.
A dermatologist may use chemical peels as part of a treatment plan for precancerous skin lesions like actinic keratosis.
By removing dead skin cells and clogged pores, chemical peels can reduce the size and appearance of enlarged pores.
Peels can effectively treat hyperpigmentation, including sunspots, age spots, and melasma.
Chemical peels have the ability to stimulate collagen, resulting in smoother skin and reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.
In addition to acne scar treatment, chemical peels may be beneficial for improving the texture of certain types of traumatic or surgical scars.
Chemical peels can be used to address certain non-cancerous skin growths like seborrheic keratosis.
Sun damage and photoaging, such as age spots, wrinkles and texture irregularities can be reversed with medium and deeper peels.
Peels can result in overall skin tone and skin texture improvement, helping to resolve issues such as blotchiness or pigmentation.
The ideal candidate for a chemical peel would like to address fine lines, sun damage, or uneven pigmentation. Suitable candidates have no history of keloid scarring or active infections, and have realistic expectations. Consulting with a medical professional is essential before undergoing a chemical peel.
