A thigh lift, also called thighplasty, is cosmetic thigh surgery designed to reshape the thighs by removing excess skin and in some cases fat. Depending on the patient’s anatomy and desired aesthetic goals, there are different types of thigh lift options available, including:
Inner Thigh Lift: This thigh lift procedure focuses on tightening skin around the inner thigh.
Outer Thigh Lift: Also known as a lateral thigh lift, this type of thigh contouring focuses on the outer thigh and may include reshaping the buttocks.
Bilateral Thigh Lift: This technique combines lifting and tightening the skin on both inner and outer thighs.
Medial Thigh Lift: With this plastic surgery, thighs on the upper/inner region of the leg are lifted and tightened.
A thigh lift is typically recommended for individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight, resulting in loose skin around the inner or outer thighs. It can also be sought out by those who are experiencing loss of skin elasticity due to aging or genetics.
How is a thigh lift performed?
The procedure involves making incisions in well concealed areas such as the groin, then removing excess skin and fat. The incisions are then sutured into place and the remaining skin is tightened to create a pleasing appearance. Liposuction to the thighs may be performed in combination with surgery to remove excess skin and fat.
What are thigh lift risks?
Like any surgical procedure, there are risks involved, including infection, scarring, bleeding, seroma, numbness, thrombosis and adverse reactions to the anesthesia. It’s also possible to be unsatisfied with the results. For this reason choose a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon to minimize these risks.

Downtime and recovery: Each person experiences the recovery period differently. Your unique healing journey will be based on your specific type of thigh lift, and how well your body heals. Below are some general guidelines for what you can expect:
1 Day Post-Op: It’s normal to experience some initial pain and discomfort. Your surgeon will prescribe pain medication to help keep you comfortable. You will most likely need to wear compression garments to minimize swelling and provide support for your new thigh contours.
1 Week Post-Op: Swelling and bruising are normal and should start to subside within the first week. During this time, rest and adequate sleep are very important. Avoid strenuous activities and be diligent about following your surgeon’s instructions about how much and what type of activities are allowed. Your first follow-up appointment with your surgeon will take place after 5–7 days.
2-6 Weeks Post-Op:
You will be able to gradually increase the duration and level of physical activities. You can start to manage thigh lift scars using scar creams and massage. Attend all scheduled follow-up visits with your surgeon to make sure you’re healing properly and address any issues if they arise.
Long-term recovery:
Final results may take several months as swelling subsides and your new and improved thigh contours are fully visible. Follow a healthy diet, lifestyle and exercise regularly to ensure the results of your thigh lift surgery are long-lasting.
Follow pre-operative instructions: You will be provided with detailed pre-operative instructions by your surgeon. These may include avoiding medications that promote bleeding, making sure you have all the medications you’ll need post-operatively and when to stop eating and drinking the night before.
Arrange for help: You will need someone to pick you up from the hospital and take you home. Designate a friend, relative or hired help to assist you with daily activities during the initial few days or weeks following surgery.
Plan for your recovery: Please note that your mobility will be restricted. Prepare a safe and comfortable space for your thigh lift recovery. Stock up on necessary items such as loose-fitting pants and post-surgery compression garments. Place all the necessary items like medications, remote control and reading material within easy reach to avoid unnecessary movement.

A thigh lift consultation and medical evaluation with a qualified Thigh Lift Surgeon is the first step in preparing for the procedure. Choose someone with experience performing the best thigh lift techniques. The surgeon will assess your condition and recommend the most suitable method to help you reach your aesthetic goals.
If you’re a smoker it’s best to quit smoking at least six weeks in advance. Nicotine and other chemicals in tobacco can constrict blood vessels and impair your body’s ability to heal adequately post surgery.
The ideal candidate should have significant skin laxity, excess skin and soft tissue around the inner or outer thighs. Here are some other factors to consider:
Good overall health: A person should be in excellent health and a non-smoker. This includes having no serious physical, emotional or mental conditions that could affect the outcome or be a contraindication to surgery and general anesthesia.
Stable Weight: It’s generally recommended that candidates maintain a consistent and healthy weight and lifestyle. Any drastic fluctuations in weight can affect the long-term thigh lift results.
Have realistic expectations: Candidates should have realistic expectations about thigh lift surgery outcomes. While the procedure can improve the thigh contours, it’s not designed for weight loss, plus there are potential risks involved (see FAQ’s).
Be committed to recovery: The ideal candidate is someone who fully understands what’s involved with the procedure and post-care. During the initial few weeks post surgery, the thigh lift recovery process involves rest and limitations on performing many physical activities.
