Gluteal augmentation and remodelling, also known as a "butt augmentation" or "buttock reshaping," is a cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of the buttocks.
Gluteal augmentation and remodelling, also known as a “butt augmentation” or “buttock reshaping,” is a cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of the buttocks. Depending on body type and desired outcomes a different buttock augmentation technique may be used, such as:
Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL): This is a combination procedure that uses liposuction to harvest fat from areas where excess fat is not desired, such as the abdomen, thighs, or back. The fat is then re-injected into the buttocks to achieve gluteal enhancement.
Fat Grafting: If an individual would like to enhance their buttock appearance as a standalone butt lift procedure, fat can be removed from one area of the body through liposuction and then injecting it into the buttocks.
Butt Implants: This gluteal reshaping surgery uses silicone implants to increase volume and achieve a more rounded and lifted appearance. Gluteal implants may be used when there isn’t enough donor fat to achieve successful fat transfer to the buttocks.
An individual may choose this procedure for the following reasons:
Gluteal sculpting: The procedure can be sought out to improve the shape and size of the buttocks for aesthetic reasons, such as to create more balanced and harmonious proportions.
After pregnancy: A woman may be unhappy with the postpartum changes to the shape and volume of the buttocks. Gluteal augmentation can boost self-confidence by restoring a woman’s pre-pregnancy figure and appearance.
Aging and gravity: With age the skin loses elasticity and the fat gets redistributed. As a result, the buttocks can lose volume and firmness. Buttock lift surgery, such as fat grafting, BBL and in some cases implants, can help reverse these age-related concerns.
How long can I expect my gluteal augmentation to last?
The longevity of butt augmentation is long-lasting; however, factors such as aging, weight fluctuations and lifestyle choices can impact the results over the long-term.
What are the complications of a gluteal augmentation?
Like any surgical procedure, there are risks involved, including infection, scarring, and adverse reactions to the anesthesia. It’s also possible to be unsatisfied with the results. For this reason choose a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon to minimize these risks.
We invite you to book a consultation with one of our expert plastic surgeons to find out if gluteal augmentation and remodelling is right for you.

Downtime and recovery: Each person experiences the recovery period differently. Your unique healing journey will be based on what type of procedure you had and how well your body heals. Below are some general guidelines for what you can expect:
1 Day Post-Op: It’s normal to experience some soreness, bruising, swelling and initial feeling of numbness. You will be prescribed pain medication to keep you comfortable. Your surgeon will recommend alternating periods of rest with taking short walks to promote circulation and minimize swelling.
It’s important to rest and sleep on your side or abdomen to avoid putting pressure on your buttocks. Doing so can impact the fat grafts and ultimately the final results. Purchase a booty pillow in advance to help you sit in the right position over the coming weeks.
1 Week Post-Op: If you had liposuction for body contouring, you will wake up from surgery wearing a compression garment. Wear it as instructed to help the skin retract, and to reduce swelling and fluid retention.
Your booty pillow will be your best friend, making you comfortable and ensuring you keep pressure off your butt. Lymphatic massage is recommended at this time to promote healing. Your first follow-up appointment with your surgeon will take place after 5–7 days.
2-4 Weeks Post-Op:
Pain and soreness will gradually subside; however, swelling can continue for several months. Regular walking will help resolve swelling over time. Avoid strenuous activity such as heavy lifting. Always sit using your booty pillow.
During week four you can resume light exercise. Your surgeon will advise you when you can start driving again. Do not lift heavy objects. It’s normal to experience slight tenderness in the buttocks or liposuction site. If serious discomfort persists, however, contact your surgeon right away.
Long-term recovery:
Most pain and discomfort should be gone by week six. At this point you should see visible results from your gluteal enhancement procedure. It’s important to understand that only approximately 40 percent of the transferred fat cells survive and establish a blood supply, thereby becoming permanent.
Follow pre-operative instructions: You will be provided with detailed pre-operative instructions by your surgeon. These may include avoiding medications that promote bleeding, making sure you have all the medications you’ll need post-operatively and when to stop eating and drinking the night before.
Arrange for help: You will need someone to pick you up from the clinic or hospital and take you home. You will not be able to sit properly after surgery, so having someone nearby to help you with basic tasks and medications for the first few weeks is recommended.
Plan for your recovery: You should designate a quiet, comfortable place for recovery. Make sure to take adequate time off work or social engagements as necessary.
A consultation and medical evaluation with a qualified Plastic Surgeon is the first step in preparing for your gluteal augmentation procedure. During your initial meeting you can discuss your aesthetic goals, which technique is best suited for you (BBL or implants), and whether your surgeon recommends any complementary procedures, such as liposuction.
If you’re a smoker it’s best to quit smoking at least six weeks in advance. Nicotine and other chemicals in tobacco can constrict blood vessels and impair your body’s ability to heal adequately post surgery
The ideal candidate for gluteal augmentation and remodelling is someone who desires a fuller or more sculpted buttock contour. Here are some other factors to consider:
Good overall health: A person should be in excellent health and a non-smoker. This includes having no serious physical conditions that could affect the outcome or be a contraindication to surgery and general anesthesia.
Good muscle tone: Being in shape can enhance the results of gluteal enhancement surgery. The surgeon may recommend specific exercises to tone the muscles prior to the procedure.
Sufficient fat: If a Brazilian butt lift is desired, the ideal candidate should have enough donor fat in areas like the abdomen, thighs, or flanks for successful grafting.
Have realistic expectations: A clear understanding of what can and cannot be achieved with a gluteal augmentation can ensure satisfactory results.
Be committed to recovery: Recovering from gluteal augmentation can take several weeks or even months. Sitting properly will be a challenge for the first few months after surgery.
