What is gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is enlargement of male breasts caused by an excess accumulation of glandular tissue. Pseudogynecomastia, which is more frequent, is a buildup of fat that manifests around, behind and underneath the nipple and chest area.
How to differentiate between these two conditions?
If you feel a small rubbery lump or simple enlargement of your breast, do not hesitate to consult your plastic surgeon. During consultation, an assessment of your medical condition, weight changes, medications and hormonal status will be done. A blood test may be ordered by your doctor.
How common is gynecomastia/pseudogynecomastia?
Around puberty 1 in 4 boys is affected. After 20 years of age the percentage goes to 1 in 10 men.
What is the treatment of gynecomastia/pseudogynecomastia?
Liposuction alone is the treatment in more than 90% of cases. Vaser liposuction technology allows fat emulsification and avoids skin sagging, Vaser technology is considered the latest technology in liposuction, where it uses ultrasound energy to penetrate the fat tissues which are then suctioned through a gentle tube and leaves the area without a scar, as the case with traditional liposuction.
The second type of surgery is glandular gynecomastia, which needs surgical excision.Post massive weight loss patients may also need skin excision surgery.
What you need to know about the procedure:
Vaser liposuction is the Gold Standard solution for pseudogynecomastia. The procedure takes 45 to 60 minutes. Two tiny incisions done which leaves the area scarless and is easier to heal post op. The incision is made under the breast area or in the peri-areolar space to allow fat removal and skin tightening.
The post-operative period:
A garment is worn directly after the procedure. A simple care is prescribed by your doctor.
The recovery period:
Vaser liposuction is not a painful procedure. Minor discomfort may be encountered during a period of one to 3 days. In general, daily activities could be resumed within 48 hours and sports activities within 2 to 3 weeks depending on activity level.
The garment helps the healing process and should be worn for a period of 4 to six weeks.
A follow up with your surgeon is scheduled within a few days after the surgery and then after 3 to 4 weeks.
